Maine is experiencing an unprecedented housing shortage – at all income levels, and for all types of housing. It is estimated that the state needs to produce 76,000 new housing units within the next 5 years.
The housing shortage impacts personal opportunity, economic growth, and quality of life for all Mainers. When there aren’t enough homes, young families can’t put down roots, teachers and first responders can’t live close to their work, seniors can’t age in place, and businesses can’t hire the workers they need to grow.
Housing can be built in smart ways, to support vibrant downtowns, create ‘right-sized’ homes to meet peoples’ needs, and contribute to towns’ fiscal strength.
Build Homes, Build Community is a movement to build public support for common sense solutions to our housing crisis.
